Fred enlisted in the Army Infantry and was later selected for flight school. He earned his commission and flew with the U.S. Army Air Forces and later the U.S. Air Force from World War II through Vietnam. He flew numerous aircraft from the B-17 to the KC-135. He also flew 52 combat missins in Korea in the B-26 Marauder.
