LtCol Cable joined the USAF in the fall of 1971 during the Vietnam War Era. His first assignment was Wilford Hall USAF Hospital in San Antonio. While at Lackland he completed Flight Nurse Training School and Water Survival Training School.
He was transferred to U-Tapao Royal Thai Naval Hospital in Thailand in June 1973. It was during his flight to U-Tapao where he met Bert. He and Bert sat side by side for 12 hours on the flight and quickly became best friends. That friendship has persisted till this day some 50 years later. Actually, this year is the 50-year anniversary of their friendship.
From U-Tapao LtCol Cable was assigned to the base hospital at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska. While at Elmendorf he was assigned to an air evac squadron. He obtained more than 400 hours flying time flying Air Evac missions throughout Alaska and to Seattle Washington. He attended and survived Arctic Survival Training School while stationed at Elmendorf.
From Elmendorf he went to Pediatric Nurse Practitioner School and became a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for the USAF. The rest of his AF career was as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Grissom AFB, Indiana, Eglin AFB, Florida, Williams AFB, Arizona and Anderson AFB Guam. While stationed at Guam he participated in Operation Fiery Vigil providing health care to children being evacuated from Clark AFB in the Philippines. Clark AFB was totally destroyed by the eruption of a volcano - Mt Pinatubo.
LtCol retired from the USAF in Sep 1992 having served for 21 years on active duty.
