Following Korea, James Macauley Jr. completed his law degree at Rutgers University and was elected to State Senator of Connecticut in 1970. He then became Assistant Town Council for Greenwich, CT later retiring Newton, CT to fish and continue with his woodworking hobby. In his final years, he moved to Carlsbad, CA with his wife Delia. He enjoyed volunteering at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.
