Gunny volunteered on two separate occasions to deploy with the First MEF Headquarters Group to the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. Gunny's solid leadership in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom resulted in the elimination of a vicious insurgent network within The Sentinel Battle space.

While in Fallujah, Gunny passed away on 19 November 2008.
