Upon graduation from West Point, Ulysses Grant served during the Mexican American War where he distinguished himself in combat. He retired from the Army and re-joined at the beginning of the Civil War. After leading several decisive victories, he was appointed Commanding General of the Union Army.

Historians have hailed Grant's military genius, and his strategies are featured in military history textbooks. He later served two terms as President during the Reconstruction Era.
