Upon graduation from Providence College, William Edward Commette was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through the ROTC Patriot Battalion. After college, he completed training at the Army's Engineer Officer School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and was assigned to the 575th Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, as a platoon leader. He was soon sent to Vietnam for duty with the 589th Engineer Battalion and eventually to the 610th Engineer Company. He supervised road construction and repair at Cam Ranh Bay, Phan Rang Air Base, Ban Me Thuot, and other locations along U.S. Highways #1 and #14.
