First Lieutenant Ballantyne landed on the Beaches of Anzio; participated in the liberation of Rome. The night of 24 November 1944 led a patrol raid on German buildings at Casa Canovetta. Afterward took a radio, crawled to a commanding position and directed artillery against German positions. Although the enemy's mortars were pounding the area, he stuck to his exposed position until the Germans were eliminated.
