Following his military service, as Mayor of San Diego, Pete provided leadership that led to the organization of area veteran groups into a strong and influential body. As Governor of California, he signed over 50 bills supporting California's three million veterans. As U. S. Senator, he was a leading voice for stronger defense, foreign policies, and veteran benefits.
