1st Lieutenant Newt Heisley flew a Curtiss C-46 Commando transport conducting missions in New Guinea, the Philippines and during the Battle of Okinawa. Following Japan's surrender, he was stationed in Japan where he was assigned as part of he post-war occupation forces. Following the war, working as a graphic designer, he created the iconic black and white POW/MIA flag which remains still widely used.
