First Lieutenant Frederick Paul Volkmer was commissioned as an officer in the US Army in 1942, as part of the 45th Infantry Division, and served through 1945. He was deployed with both the 831st and 832nd Amphibian Truck Companies as a supply officer.
Lieutenant Volkmer was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 stars for service with General George Patton's 7th Army, in North Africa, and with Patton's 3rd Army in Italy, France and Germany in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations.
He received a Bronze Star for the amphibious assault landing at the Rhine River--Durkheim, Germany, in March 1945 for transporting troops while under enemy fire. His company was awarded a Meritorious Service Unit Plaque for superior performance of duty in France (Operation Dragoon) and Germany between January and March 1945. When the war in Europe ended, Lieutenant Volkmer was deployed to the Philippines in anticipation of an expected invasion of Japan, which never came to pass.
First Lieutenant Volkmer was born September 29, 1907 and spent his childhood in Edna, Texas. He graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1931 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Frederick married his wife, Estelle Davenport in 1946 and they settled in Victoria, Texas. They had two daughters, Patricia Volkmer Allen and Norma Volkmer Blake; two grandchildren, Patrick Michael Allen and Olivia Louise Blake and two great grandchildren Jason Mustafa Allen and Jacob Sinan Allen.
