Gene was a bombardier on the B-24 Liberators flying out of Tibenham, Norfolk, United Kingdom with the 700th Bomb Squadron, 445th Bombardment Group. With a crew of 10 onboard, the aircraft was shot down on April 12, 1944 about 31 km north of Neufchateau, France. Gene and 5 crewmembers were held as German Prisoners of War for over a year.
The 445th Bombardment Group was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm by the French Government for Operation in the European Theater from December 1944 to February 1945 and for their raids against German aircraft manufacturing.
