Ensign Butler first saw combat in the Doolittle Raid, engaging a Japanese patrol boat while flying an SBD-3 Dauntless off the carrrier USS ENTERPRISE.  He fought from the USS YORKTOWN in the pivotal Battle of Midway, contributing to the loss of 4 Japanese carriers.  He was last seen while his Dauntless was being fired upon by a Mitsubishi Zero during his dive attack on the enemy carrier, Hiryu.  He earned the Silver Star of the Purple Heart and was declared Killed In Action as of June, 1943.

John C. Butler was born on 2 February, 1921 in Liberty Arizona.  He enlisted in the Navy on 19 February, 1941. In april, 1941, after completion of his enlisted service he accepted appointment as Ensign to take Navyal Flight Training and begaan his service in the Pacific during World War II.  A US Navy Destroyer, USS John C. Butler (DD-339), ws named in hsi honor.
