Corporal Vanderstel served as an Amphibious Tractor Mechanic with the 3rd Armored Amphibious Company, 3rd AmTrac Battallion, 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Forces.
Born in Rotterdam Holland immigrated to the United States and became a U.S. citizen 1954 while serving in the Marine Corps. Achieved the rank of Corporal USMC. Served at Camp Pendleton and Korea.
He loved the study of the martial arts and achieved 3rd degree black belt in Goju-ryu karate.
He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
