As Corporal Dunham led his team to support an ambushed convoy, an insurgent attacked the team with a grenade. Corporal Dunham covered the grenade with his helmet and body, resulting in his death, but saving his comrades.
Corporal Dunham was awarded the first MOH for a Marine since Vietnam in 1970. Assigned to Company K, 3rd Battalion, Seventh Marines (Reinforced) Regimental Combat Team, 1st Marine Division, he was awarded the MOH for using his body to shield comrades from an exploding grenade, dropped by an Iraqi enemy whom he was struggling with in hand-to-hand combat, while manning a checkpoint in Husaybah, Iraq. He died eight days later at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Dunham was presented the Purple Heart by the Commandant of the Marine Corps shortly before he passed away on April 22nd, 2004. He was awarded the MOH posthumously.
