Commander "Spuds" Ellyson was a part of the rich history of what is now knows as Naval Air Statio n North Island. He was the first U.S. navy officer to be designated as a Naval Aviator. He conducted the Navy's earliest flightg tests, developed pilot training programs, and advanced seaplane and carrier aviation.
