Commander Eikel served in World War II. He was awarded the Navy Cross for Extraordinary Heroism as the Task Unit Commander of a Landing Craft Infantry (Gunboat) close -in fire support unit during operations against the enemy. He later led a small detachment aboard a patially sunken hulk and killed four enemy snipers.
