In Honor Of All Who Served in Naval Special Warfare
Al enlisted in the Army National Guard and was released to
join the USN. He accepted a commission in the Air National
Guard and served with the 176th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.
He rejoined the USN to become a Navy SEAL. Commander
Winter was the BUPERS "Point Man" for the development of
SEAL insignias, circa 1970. All UDT personnel were later
upgraded to SEAL status.
Commander Albert W. Winter Military History
Albert Winter spent time in three services: Army, Navy and Air Force. He first served
in an Army National Guard ordnance company in Wisconsin. Winter was discharged from the Army National Guard and joined the US Navy. He served aboard a ship for one year as an electronics technician.
Al was accepted into Underwater Demolition Team training and graduated from Class 18 to become a Navy frogman. He served with Underwater Demolition Team Twelve (UDT-12) throughout the Pacific theater.
He was discharged after four years of honorable service and continued his education at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Al was commissioned in the Air National Guard and became an aviator with the 176th Fighter Interceptor Squadron flying out of Truax Field in Madison, Wisconsin.
During the Viet Nam era, Al requested and was granted an interservice transfer back to the Navy where he completed Seal Basic Indoctrination Training in 1968. He became a Seal Team One platoon commander and served in Viet Nam. Following ST-1, he was the sole officer assigned to the SEAL/UDT/EOD office in the Bureau of Navy Personnel.
Winter then received orders and served as Executive Office of UDT-11 where he commanded one-half of Team 11 as Officer in Charge (OIC) in Subic Bay, Phillipines.
Al attended Naval Post Graduate School where he received his Master’s Degree in
Oceanography. He next served as Commanding Office of UDT-12. He then accepted the SEAL staff billet at Naval Special Operations Task Force Europe in Stuttgart, Germany.
Upon returning to the states Al accepted an assignment as Officer in Charge of the Nuclear Weapons Training Group Pacific. Next, he was assigned the position of Senior Inspector for Pacific Fleet Nuclear Weapons which included surface, air, sub-surface and land based weapons. His Inspection Teams were assigned the task of inspecting all nuclear asserts in the Pacific Theater.
Commander Winter retired from the U S Navy in 1987 and is now living in San Diego with his wife Sandi. They have a daughter and two sons and are the proud grandparents of seven
grandchildren and one great grandchild.
