He was one of the most highly decorated Vietnam veterans...nominated three times for the Medal of Honor and the recipient of eight Purple Hearts. Special Forces/ Combat Parachutist, serving with the Military Advisor Command, Special Operations Group in Vietnam.
Howard enlisted as a 17-year-old Private and retired as a Colonel after 34 years of service. He served five tours in Vietnam, totaling 54 months of combat duty in the Special Forces. He was wounded 14 times as he served in the secret Military Assistance Command, Vietnam-Studies and Observation Group, or MACV-SOG, whose members were assigned to deep-penetration reconnaissance and interdiction missions. He was nominated three times for the MOH, which he was awarded in 1971 as a member of 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces (Airborne) for the rescue of a seriously wounded platoon leader under enemy fire. He was believed to be the most decorated living US Soldier at his time of death on February 22, 2010.
