A combat pilot, Dick flew 101st Airborne Division paratroopers in support of D-Day in Normandy, France and later Operation Market-Garden into Holland. As a cold-war warrior flying the B-47 Stratojet, he participated as part of the Strategic Air Command Nuclear Triade. Then as Base Commander, U-Tapao, Thailand he supported air operations in the Vietnam War. He retired with 36 years, as the most senior colonel in the Air Force.
