Joseph commanded the 548th AntiAircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion in combat action from Normandy, France to the Elbe via Belgium, Holland and Germany. In support of the 102nd Infantry Division his unit shot down 64 enemy aircraft. His unit was called by the Division CG as a "Top Flight, A-1 Outfit."
