Colonel Alvarez flew 985 aeromedical evacuation missions in the United States (including Alaska & Hawaii), Canada, Europe, Mexico, Central America, and the Middle and Far East. He commanded Army hospitals in Iraq and Italy. He led military research programs that developed vaccines and medical evacuation equipment. He led the Army's countermeasure program against injuries from improvised explosive devices.
