John, an Army Ranger, was a Signal Corps Commander in the Vietnam War where he received two awards of the Bronze Star. A 1969 graduate of the US Military Academy, he earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and served for ten years at West Point as a permanent faculty member. For his exemplary performance and lasting contribution to the Corps, he was awarded the Legion of Merit.
