Jay Vargas earned our nation's highest award for valor for the selfless acts of courage displayed while leading his Marines into fierce battle with disregard for his own serious combat wounds.
Then Captain Vargas G Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade was located at the fortified villages of Dai Do & Dinh To. From April 30th to May 2nd he was wounded 3 times, yet maintained expert leadership as he led his Marines through non-stop action. He refused medical attention as he inspired his men in their relentless advance on the enemy positions. Despite reinforced NVA counterattacks Vargas remained in the open, encouraging his men. Observing his Battalion Commander sustain a serious wound, he disregarded his excruciating pain, and crossed the fire- swept area to carry his comrade to a covered position, then resumed organizing the battalion’s perimeter defense. He is one of four decorated war veteran brothers, and he had his mother’s name inscribed on his Medal of Honor. He resides in San Diego
