Colonel Makoski is a native of Ohio and graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1992 earning a BS in Industrial Technology. He was commissioned in 1994 and designated a Naval Aviator in August 1996.
In April of 1997, 1stLt Makoski was assigned to HMLA-367, Camp Pendleton as an AH-1W pilot. He was promoted to Captain in October 1997. He served in the S-4 and Operations department and deployed twice with HMM-262 (REIN), 31st MEU, in Okinawa, Japan in April 1998 and July 2000. In November 1999, he graduated from the Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course.
In April 2001, Capt Makoski reported to 847 Naval Air Squadron, RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset, England as an exchange pilot where he served as the 847 WTI in the AH-7 Lynx helicopter. He deployed for combat operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq in support of UK Operation Oracle [OEF], and Operation telic [OIF].
From 2003, Capt Makoski served as the Attack Helicopter Representative at the Tactical Training and Exercise Control Group (TTECG) in Twentynine Palms. Capt Makoski was promoted to Major in March 2004.
Maj Makoski reported to H&HS, MCAS Miramar in October 2005 where he initially deployed to Qatar in support of CENTCOM from October 2005 to May 2006. Upon completion, he served as the Training Officer for VMR Det Miramar. He deployed to Al Udeid, Qatar in support of OIF/OEF from April to August 2007.
In August 2008, Maj Makoski joined MAG-39 where he deployed with 3d MAW FWD from October 2008 to February 2009 in support of OIF with follow-on orders to Kandahar, Afghanistan where he assumed the duties of Battle Captain, SPMAGTF ACE. In March 2009, Maj Makoski was assigned to HMLA-367 as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer and Executive Officer. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF from October 2009 to May 2010. In May 2011, Maj Makoski was assigned as the Headquarters Squadron 39 Commanding Officer and was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in November 2011.
In July 2012, he reported to SHAPE, NATO, where he served as the Senior Watch Officer and the Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations and Intelligence. Upon completion, LtCol Makoski attended the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA and graduated with a Master of Strategic Studies in June 2016.
In December 2016, LtCol Makoski assumed command of HMLA-367 “Scarface”. Following command, he reported to MCBH, Kaneohe Bay in August 2018 and assumed the duties of Director, S-3. Colonel Makoski was promoted to his present rank in April 2019.
In July 2019, Col Makoski reported to MARFORPAC and assumed the duties of Assistant Chief of Staff G-10 Force Preservation and subsequently as Director, G-33 Current Operations in February 2020. In July 2021, Col Makoski reported to Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and assumed the duties of Force Marine Officer. Col Makoski retired 28 Aug 2025.
Personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with gold star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Air Medal with Strike/Flight numeral six, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Col Makoski is married to the former Edyta Kwiatkowska of Krakow, Poland. They have twin daughters, Maia and Nela (2018).
