Arthur was honored for his exceptional valor and his unit's heroism in action in the South Pacific. Later in Korea, his command fought with bravery during the historic battle of Chosin Reservoir. Arthur's unit was attacked at "Hellfire Valley" on the road from Koto-ri to Hagaru-ri. Badly wounded, he was taken prisoner and later declared missing in action.
