James joined the Navy in 1950 and rose through the ranks as an Aviation Boatswain's Mate to become a Mustang, retiring as a CW03. Served on the USS Kula Gulf (CVE-105), NTC Great Lakes, NAS North Island, Keflavik, Iceland and Miramar.
