John served as a "China Marine" with the 4th Marines in Shanghai, China, as a Security Guard in British Guiana, with the 11th Marines in the Battle of Okinawa, and with the 1st Tank Battalion in Korea. He also helped develop guided missiles as part of "Operation Bumble Bee."
