Chief Damage Controlman (DCC) Steven Varani honorably served over 23 years in the U.S. military. He began his career in the U.S. Navy, serving a total of 6 years, including time aboard the USS Ranger (CV-61) as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Second Class (ABE2), and later at SIMA San Diego. After transitioning to the U.S. Coast Guard, DCC Varani served with distinction for 17 years at Station Cleveland, Group Detroit, and aboard cutters including the USCGC Mohawk (WMEC-913), USCGC Munro (WHEC-724), and USCGC Chase (WHEC-718), accumulating approximately 12 years of total sea time.
A highly respected leader in shipboard safety and damage control, DCC Varani was known for his unwavering commitment to his crew and mission readiness. He retired in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, mentorship, and service.
Throughout his military career, he and his wife raised three sons, with his wife steadfastly supporting their family through every deployment and PCS. DCC Varani is remembered as a dedicated sailor, a proud father, and a loving husband. His legacy lives on through his family, the shipmates he served alongside, and all those he inspired with his strength and leadership.
