Joe, a Native American Cherokee, served three years in the Army as a machine gunner and later had a Navy career as aviation mechanic and aviation photographer. As Admiral Bull Halsey's staff photographer during WWII, he provided aerial photographic reconnaissance during the Battle of Midway. He documented the atomic bomb testing at the Bikini Atolls and subsequently served during the Korean War.
