Manuel was born in Rizal, Philippines and survived the Japanese occupation during WWII then joined the US Navy and became a US citizen. He proudly served 22 years, and retired as Chief Petty Officer. After his exemplary Navy career, he worked for the US Postal Service as an LSM Operator in San Diego.
