Charles, the son of a regular Army Officer, attended West Point and became a Cavalry Officer in the days of the Indian Wars in the American West.

• 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Cavalry, 11 June 1888

* Promoted to Captain in 1901 with a Presidential Proclamation signed by President William McKinley
