Matt Shillingburg was born at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in October 1954, into a Navy Family of 5 children and began his life growing up in Navy Housing in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Matt’s Grandfather, on Father's side, 7th Cav Trooper, fought during the Spanish American War. His Dad was a "Frogman" and was in the very first class of UDT/BUDS in 1947. Matt’s grandfather, Russel Stout, on his mother’s side was a LDO in the Navy and served for over 30 years in the Navy. Matt moved with his Navy Family and settled in Imperial Beach, California in 1960 where he lived with his family until he joined the service in August of 1974. Matt Shillingburg, served honorably in the United States Army, entering the service as an enlisted Private, E-1 and retiring as the Senior Military Intelligence Officer, S2 for the 3rd Armor Calvary Regiment with over 20 years (1974 - 1996) of Military Service, which allowed him to travel to over 18 different countries around the world. He is also a 100% Service-connected Disabled Veteran, as rated by the Veterans Administration with an Honorable Discharge. Matt held a Top Secret (TS), Special Background Investigation (SBI) with Sensitive Compartmented Access (SCI) as a United States Army Intelligence Officer. He was a “Mustang” United States Army Officer and was fortunate to have served in many diverse areas and specialties during his career. His enlisted career began with Basic Combat Training at Fort Ord, California, in August 1974, graduating with a promotion as an honor graduate. After Boot Camp, Matt was sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma to begin Advanced Individual Training (AIT) as a 13E, at the Fire Direction Center, with an assignment to an operational 8-inch Nuke Unit in Wertheim, Federal Republic Germany in December 1974. Upon Permanent Change in Station (PCS) in the spring of 1977, Sgt Shillingburg was assigned to a 105m Battalion, supporting an Infantry Brigade of the 7th Division as a Fire Support Sargent, prior to re-enlisting. Matt re-enlisted as a United States Army Intelligence Analyst/Interrogator and was assigned to attend Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Huachuca, Arizona in August 1980 prior to attending the Defense Language Institute (DLI), Monterey, California in January 1981 for Spanish and German Language Training. His first assignment after Defense Language School (DLI) was attached to the 766th Military Intelligence Detachment, 66th Military Intelligence Group - Munich, 5th Military Intelligence Company – Munich, and worked at the Joint Allied Refugee Operations Center – JAROC-B behind the “Iron Curtain,” that operated a Joint (with the British and French) Refugee Operation in the American Sector at a suburb called Mariannefelde in West Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) as Strategic Debriefer/Intelligence Analyst.” During Matt’s tour in Berlin during the “Cold War,” in 1982, Matt was selected to go to the British Intelligence School at Ashford, Kent, United Kingdom. During this period Matt worked at Mount Batten, Royal Airforce (RAF) Station United Kingdom and Hereford, Wales, prior to being selected to attend Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1984. He had the privilege of serving as an Air Defense and Test Officer as well as Platoon Leader, Personal Officer, a Commander of 200 Soldiers, and a Detachment Officer at the United States Army Jungle School in Panama. Matt ended his career as the Senior Intelligence Officer, S2, for the 3rd Armor Calvary Regiment (3rd ACR, which was Commanded by General Patton during his career).
