Captain Schumann completed 138 combat missions in Vietnam and Laos in 1971/72, serving as Aircraft Commander of the AC-119K "Stinger" Gunship 18th SOS in Da Nang and NKP Thailand. He was also an Instructor Pilot and the Standardization Evaluation Flight Examiner for the 18th SOS. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and 13 Air Medals, as well as various other medals. Captain Schumann and Captain Iversen were roommates, becoming closer than brothers, looking out for each other on the ground and in the air for 47 years.
