Captain Rath enliste in 1935, and served in USS SAN FRANCISCO (CA-38) statined in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  He was appointed Warrent Officer in 1942 and Ensign in1943.  With over 37 years of service he retire as Captain in March, 1973.

During WWII he served in several ships, ending the war on a fleet oiler in Tokyo Bay.  He served as Executive Officer in USS FRANK KNOX (DD-742; Commanding Officer in USS AGERHOLM (DD-726); Commanding Officer USS BROWN (DD-546) and Commander Destroyer Division212.  He was Chief of Staff of the Naval Support Activity, Da Nang and then as Chief of Staff, Amphibious Base Coronardo.

 

He attended the Armed Forced Staff College and the Naval War College.
