Captain Divis served as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard Frigates, Detroyers, Cruisers and logistics ships. During the Persian Gulf War, Conrad served aboard the USS MARS (AFS-1) as Executive Officer. His first command was aboard the USS Willamette (AO-180), a fleet oiler. He also served as Commodore of the Military Prepositioning Ship Squadron 3 and Commanding Officer of USNS MERCY hospital ship.
