Herman earned the Medal of Honor while a Sergeant for his extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in the Republic of Haiti. He was later directly commissioned Second Lieutenant.
He was awarded the MOH for action on Nov 1, 1919, when Sergeant Hanneken assassinated Haitian rebel leader Charlemagne Péralte after infiltrating his Northern Haiti headquarters. Five months later he assassinated Perralte’s successor, Osiris Joseph. He went on to an illustrious 34-year career and served in eight different military campaigns, and was awarded the Navy Cross with 1 star and the Silver Star. Prior to his retirement, he commanded the 7th Marine Regiment. He died in 1986 at the Veterans Hospital in La Jolla and is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
