The 187th was one of the most decorated units in Vietnam. They were based 80 miles northwest of Saigon near the Cambodian border and consisted of two lift platoons, a gun and maintenance platoon, and a Headquarters element augmented by detachments of 602nd Maintenance, 1st Signal, and 541st Medical. The mission was to provide direct combat support to the troops on the ground, insertion and extraction of forces; medical evacuation, and delivery of food, ammunition and water. Their Huey and Cobra Helicopters were armed with mini guns, rockets, grenade launchers and two M-60 machine guns.
