Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial Partners with Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans

Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial has partnered with the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans this week to provide a great educational opportunity for students from the Elementary Institute of Science. Beginning April 1st and through April 5th, the memorial will host 20 students per day for a 20-minute educational tour of the site.

We are proud to offer this experience as these students learn about the history of the region and the country through the plaques on our walls. The memorial is a valuable educational resource that conveys the significant military and veteran history in the San Diego region, with over 10,000 veterans on our black granite honor walls. Students can gain insight into the importance of service in our nation’s armed forces and learn the value of service over self.

As Mt. Soledad approaches its 70th anniversary, we remain committed to our mission and the impact we have had on the San Diego community. We believe that investing in the community includes investing in the education offered to all students K-12. This includes partnering with organizations, such as the Walter Munk Foundation, to create a meaningful and enduring impact on our local students.

The Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans was founded on similar principles. It encourages school-aged children to embrace exploration and discovery through scientific research, education, and ocean conservation while understanding how it affects the local communities. In recent years, the foundation has helped local underprivileged students gain an understanding of the natural environment and the effects of climate change. They have also worked with the community in La Jolla to create The MAP of the Grand Canyons of La Jolla, the largest LithoMosaic in the world, depicting the bathymetry (the underwater equivalent of topography) of the local coast.
