This special ceremony celebrates the profound bond between these two services and San Diego, recognizing how their combined presence transformed our city into America’s military stronghold.
We pay tribute to Commander Theodore Gordon “Spuds” Ellyson, the Navy’s first aviator, and General Joseph Pendleton, MCRD San Diego’s first commanding officer, whose pioneering work during the critical 1916-1920 era laid the foundation for the thriving military community we know today.
