Beginning his military career in 1943 by serving in WW II, assessing the aftermath of the bombing of Hiroshima and witness to the nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll, he had first-hand knowledge of many historic events. As an electronics and communication specialist, he served on several ships prior to being assigned to the Beach Jumper/UDT unit in La Jolla. As a communications officer, he and his family were stationed in San Diego, Long Beach, Island California, as well as Brooklyn New York, Yokosuka Japan, and Athens Greece before retiring in 1970.
